BROOKLYN (WABC) -- On Friday night, police encountered a violent situation in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where they shot a suspect while responding to a stabbing incident. The 911 call reporting the stabbing came in around 11:40 p.m., prompting officers to rush to Duryea Place.

Upon their arrival, police located the victim and attempted to apprehend the 29-year-old suspect, who fled the scene. This initiated a pursuit that lasted about two and a half blocks, culminating on 21st Street. The situation escalated when the suspect allegedly charged at the officers, prompting them to fire their weapons in a split-second decision.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell detailed the sequence of events, noting that the suspect made several sudden movements that suggested he might be armed. Despite the intense circumstances, no firearm was found on the suspect, although police did recover a knife from the scene.

The suspect was shot twice and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Reportedly, he has a criminal history with four prior arrests and convictions, including assault and a gun-related offense. Meanwhile, the stabbing victim was also hospitalized but is expected to survive.

As investigations continue, the police are seeking any additional information from the public. They encourage anyone with tips or insights to reach out and share their stories.
