Wife of missing Green Beret charged with murder after body found in pond

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The case surrounding the disappearance of a North Carolina Green Beret has escalated into a murder investigation following the arrest of his wife, Shana Cloud. She was taken into custody on Friday after DNA evidence linked remains discovered in a pond to her husband, Clinton Bonnell.
Bonnell, a 50-year-old student in the Physician Assistant Program at Methodist University, was last seen on January 27. His absence was noted the following day, prompting a welfare check by university staff. Deputies spoke with Cloud, who claimed to have not seen her husband since the previous day, despite Bonnell's belongings being found at their home. The investigation quickly evolved, and the case was subsequently transferred to the Homicide Unit.
Investigators pursued further evidence, leading them to Virginia, where search warrants were executed on Cloud's vehicle and other properties. They collected various pieces of evidence, including digital data, which helped construct a timeline of events before Bonnell's disappearance. The investigation intensified when a call on February 25 reported human remains in a pond, raising suspicions about foul play.
A subsequent DNA analysis confirmed that the remains belonged to Bonnell, solidifying the case against Cloud. She has been charged with first-degree murder and concealment of death. Currently, she is being held without bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center, with her first court appearance set for Monday.
Methodist University expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of campus and local law enforcement during this challenging time, sending their support to Bonnell's family. Authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information about the case to come forward.
