The case of a missing North Carolina Green Beret has escalated into a murder investigation following the arrest of his wife, Shana Cloud. On Friday, authorities in Fayetteville charged her with first-degree murder and concealment of death after DNA from a body found in a pond earlier this year was identified as Clinton Bonnell, 50.

Bonnell was last seen on January 27 in the Gray's Creek area. A student at Methodist University in the Physician Assistant Program, he was reported missing after he failed to attend class the following day. A university employee requested a welfare check, leading deputies to Cloud, who claimed she had not seen her husband since the previous day. Bonnell's belongings, including his car and book bag, were found at their home.

The investigation quickly gained traction, with the Major Crimes Unit taking over on January 30 and later transitioning to the Homicide Unit. In early February, investigators executed search warrants on Cloud's vehicle and rental property, collecting evidence that prompted a deeper analysis of digital data, including cell phone records and video footage, to establish a timeline of events.

On February 25, human remains were discovered in a pond, but initial identification was hindered by the condition of the body. DNA collected from the remains was sent to the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System for comparison with Bonnell's DNA. The confirmation that the remains belonged to Bonnell led to the arrest of his wife.

Methodist University expressed its sympathy for Bonnell's family and gratitude for the collaboration with local law enforcement. Cloud is set to appear in court for the first time on Monday, and authorities are urging anyone with further information regarding the investigation to reach out.
