EATON, Ohio (WKEF) -- A police investigation is underway following an incident at William Bruce Elementary School where a nine-year-old student brought a gun to school on March 27. The situation came to light when the student accidentally dropped a bullet during gym class, prompting quick action from school administration and law enforcement.

Eaton Community Schools Superintendent Jeff Parker informed parents that officers located a 9mm gun in the student’s backpack immediately after the bullet was discovered. The child reportedly retrieved the firearm from their grandparent's house, highlighting the importance of responsible gun ownership and safety practices among adults with firearms.

Eaton Police Division Chief Steven Hurd emphasized the need for parents and guardians to secure their guns and educate children about gun safety. He noted that responsible storage, along with open communication about the dangers of weapons, are crucial in preventing similar incidents. The student involved claimed no intent to harm anyone and was isolated from peers while the investigation continued.

This incident at Bruce Elementary follows closely after a related event involving an 11-year-old at Fairborn Intermediate School, leading to heightened security measures and police involvement in both cases. School officials, including Superintendent Parker, are taking the matter seriously and will impose consequences for the student, while the police are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the accessibility of the weapon.

As the situation develops, both the Eaton Police Division and the local school administration are committed to ensuring safety and effective communication within the community. Hurd praised the partnership with Eaton Community Schools, emphasizing the value of collaborative efforts in addressing safety concerns in educational settings.
