Police investigate after student found with gun in backpack during gym class

EATON, Ohio (WKEF) -- An investigation is underway in Preble County after a nine-year-old student at William Bruce Elementary School brought a gun to school on March 27. The incident came to light when the student inadvertently dropped a bullet during gym class. Following this, school officials acted swiftly to search the student's belongings, discovering a 9mm handgun in the child's backpack.
Eaton Community Schools Superintendent Jeff Parker confirmed that police were notified immediately. The child had reportedly obtained the firearm from a grandparent's house. Eaton Police Division Chief Steven Hurd emphasized the importance of gun safety, urging gun owners to secure their firearms and engage children in discussions about gun safety as they grow older.
The student stated that there was no intention to cause harm, and school administration promptly isolated the child from other students. Notably, it was clarified that the backpack containing the gun did not enter any classrooms. The incident has sparked conversations about the responsibilities of parents and guardians in teaching children about the dangers of firearms.
This incident follows a similar event involving an 11-year-old at Fairborn Intermediate School, which has prompted local law enforcement to increase their presence in schools and initiate further investigations. Concerns regarding gun safety education were echoed by a parent of two children at Bruce Elementary, who stressed the necessity for parents to actively inform their children about the real dangers of firearms.
As the case progresses, Eaton Police are collaborating with school officials, showcasing a strong partnership aimed at ensuring safety in the educational environment. The outcome of this investigation will not only address the student's situation but may also lead to potential charges against the adults responsible for the child's access to the weapon.
