Police investigate after student found with gun in backpack during gym class

EATON, Ohio (WKEF) -- Authorities are investigating an incident at William Bruce Elementary School where a nine-year-old student brought a gun to school on March 27. The situation emerged when the student accidentally dropped a bullet during gym class, prompting immediate action from school officials who discovered a 9mm gun in the student's backpack.
Eaton Community Schools Superintendent Jeff Parker indicated that the police were swiftly informed, leading to the student's isolation from other students. During questioning, the child reportedly claimed there was no intent to cause harm, and the backpack containing the weapon had not entered any classrooms.
The child had obtained the gun from a relative's home, raising concerns about firearm safety among families. Eaton Police Division Chief Steven Hurd emphasized the importance of responsible gun ownership, advocating for gun owners to secure their firearms and educate children about gun safety as they grow older.
This incident followed a similar occurrence involving an 11-year-old student at Fairborn Intermediate School, which resulted in heightened police presence and an ongoing investigation. Local parents expressed the necessity of teaching gun safety at an early age, stressing that children need a clear understanding of the dangers firearms pose.
The student will face disciplinary actions from the school as the case is now in the hands of law enforcement for potential charges against the student and any adults linked to the firearm's possession. The Eaton Police Division praised the strong collaboration with local schools, highlighting the effectiveness of their ongoing partnership in addressing such critical issues.
