Police investigate after student found with gun in backpack during gym class

EATON, Ohio (WKEF) -- Authorities in Preble County are investigating an incident at William Bruce Elementary School where a nine-year-old student brought a gun to school on March 27. The incident began during gym class when the student inadvertently dropped a bullet, prompting swift action from school officials to investigate further. In the student's backpack, a 9mm gun was discovered.
According to Eaton Community Schools Superintendent Jeff Parker, police were promptly informed, and the student was isolated from their peers while the investigation unfolded. During conversations with school officials, the student reportedly expressed no intent to cause harm, and it was confirmed that the backpack had not been taken into any classrooms.
Eaton Police Division Chief Steven Hurd revealed that the firearm belonged to the student's grandparent. He emphasized the importance of responsible gun ownership, urging adults to securely lock up firearms and engage in conversations with children about gun safety to prevent such incidents in the future.
This episode follows a separate incident involving an 11-year-old at Fairborn Intermediate School, which has led to heightened police presence and an ongoing investigation by Fairborn Police. The Greene County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing both situations to determine necessary actions.
In light of this incident, community members are stressing the need for age-appropriate gun safety education. Parents are reminded of their critical role in teaching children about the dangers of firearms, as many children are exposed to guns in their homes. Hurd expressed gratitude for the collaboration between law enforcement and the school system in managing these complexities and ensuring the safety of students.
