An anesthesiologist from Maui named Gerhardt Konig was indicted on attempted murder charges after allegedly trying to kill his wife during a hike in Hawaii. The incident occurred on Oahu, where the couple had traveled to celebrate her birthday while their young sons remained on Maui. According to a petition for a temporary restraining order submitted by his wife, Konig exhibited extreme jealousy stemming from unfounded accusations of infidelity.

On the day of the incident, Konig and his wife were on a narrow hiking trail featuring steep drop-offs. The wife expressed her discomfort and reluctance to continue the hike. After taking a photo of her climbing a tree, he suggested they take another picture near a cliff's edge, prompting her to request he move away as she felt dizzy. Instead, he allegedly grabbed her by the arms, pushing her toward the cliff while yelling in anger.

As the situation escalated, she realized his intention was serious and they began to wrestle. In the midst of the struggle, Konig reportedly tried to inject her with a syringe. Concerned for her safety, she fought back, and he then resorted to physically assaulting her with a rock. Witnesses on the trail intervened by calling 911 and helping her escape while Konig moved in another direction.

Emergency services took her to the hospital, and later, it was revealed that Konig had contacted his adult son, admitting to his attempt to kill her and expressing suicidal thoughts. Following the incident, a judge issued a restraining order mandating that Konig stay away from his wife and their children.

Konig, who works as an anesthesiologist at Maui Health, is currently suspended pending investigation. Maui Health clarified that he is affiliated with an independent entity, stating that his credentials to treat patients have been suspended during this inquiry.
