HONOLULU -- An anesthesiologist from Maui, Gerhardt Konig, has been indicted on attempted murder charges after a hiking incident in Oahu involving his wife. According to a petition for a temporary restraining order, Konig allegedly pushed her toward the edge of a cliff and attempted to inject her with a syringe during their hike, which she described as dangerous due to its narrow ridges and steep drop-offs.

The couple had traveled to Oahu to celebrate his wife's birthday, while their young sons stayed on Maui. During the hike, the wife expressed her discomfort and reluctance to continue. After climbing a tree for a photo, Konig proposed taking another photo near a cliff edge, prompting her to ask him to move back as she felt dizzy. When he allegedly began pushing her toward the cliff, she initially thought he was joking, but soon realized he was seriously trying to harm her.

In a struggle, she feared for her life as Konig attempted to inject her with a syringe and later assaulted her with a rock. Two women on the trail witnessed the attack and called 911, assisting her down to safety while Konig fled in another direction. An ambulance transported her to the hospital, and he was arrested later that evening.

The petition revealed that the couple had been dealing with issues in their marriage, including accusations of infidelity and jealousy from Konig. A judge has now issued a restraining order, requiring him to stay away from her and their children.

Konig, who is currently suspended from his position as an anesthesiologist at Maui Health pending investigation, reportedly mentioned to his stepson that he had attempted to kill his wife and expressed suicidal thoughts. Maui Health stated that Konig is employed through an independent entity contracted to provide medical services, and his credentials have also been suspended.
