Suspect in case of injured SLMPD officer linked to armed robbery in Midtown
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - New charges have emerged against 18-year-old Mekhi R. Campbell in connection with a February armed robbery that resulted in serious consequences for a St. Louis Metropolitan Police officer after a March crash. Campbell now faces first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, and armed criminal action related to the assault and theft from a 60-year-old woman outside a Wells Fargo on February 26.
According to a police probable cause statement, Campbell and an unnamed accomplice attacked the victim by striking her in the head with a handgun before stealing her purse. The woman was subsequently treated at a local hospital for her injuries, and the entire incident was captured on bank surveillance cameras. Investigators linked Campbell to the crime through an identified vehicle associated with the robbery.
Currently, Campbell is being held without bond on these new charges. He is already facing multiple felony charges stemming from a separate incident on March 17, where a police officer, Nathan Spiess, was critically injured while attempting to apprehend Campbell following a carjacking related chase.
During the police pursuit, Campbell's vehicle crashed into another car on Interstate 70. After the crash, both Campbell and a juvenile passenger fled the scene on foot. As Officer Spiess was arresting the juvenile, they were struck by a vehicle, resulting in significant injuries to both. Spiess has undergone three surgeries and has been discharged from the hospital, while the juvenile also suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the car that hit them has since been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and tampering with evidence. Frank Carr, 62, is facing these charges as the investigation continues into the events surrounding the robbery and the subsequent crash that severely impacted law enforcement personnel.
