Oakland police worried about rise in crime after officer assaulted in broad daylight at red light

An Oakland police officer is recovering after being assaulted in broad daylight on International Boulevard near 105th Avenue last Friday afternoon. The incident has raised concerns within the police department regarding a potential increase in crime in the area. Lieutenant Tim Dolan, a 25-year veteran of the force, expressed that such an attack, occurring while officers were stopped at a red light, is unexpected and troubling.
During the incident, the passenger-side officer was struck in the face while the patrol car's windows were down. Despite the surprise attack, the officer managed to defend himself, and with the help of his partner, apprehended the suspect. The injured officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation but has since returned home.
Although the identity of the officer has not been disclosed, it is known that he is a recent graduate of Oakland's police academy and undergoing training. The police will not provide specifics about the suspect, who has been placed on a mental health hold, citing privacy rights and that no charges have yet been filed.
The police union has highlighted a worrying trend of rising crime rates in Oakland, stating that homicides and shootings have increased compared to the previous year. Dolan voiced concerns about how budget cuts and declining staffing levels might impact the city's ability to maintain safety and effectively police the area.
City leaders have not responded to requests for comment regarding this incident and the overall rise in crime. Police are encouraging anyone with information about the assault to reach out to the Oakland Police Department for further investigation.
