Cindy Denholm, a 68-year-old woman from Costilla County, died from injuries sustained in an attack by domestic dogs, as determined by the El Paso County Coroner. Her body was discovered on January 23, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of her death.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) became involved in the investigation once it was confirmed that animals were responsible for the incident. CPW ruled out wildlife, indicating that the attack was likely conducted by domestic dogs, some of which have been known to roam freely in the area. Reports suggest that there may be feral dogs in the vicinity as well.

In response to the attack, the sheriff's office collected swab samples from the bite wounds, which are now available for DNA analysis to help identify the animals involved. Costilla County Sheriff Danny Sanchez issued a statement concerning the incident, indicating the seriousness of the situation and the need for further investigation.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is working alongside the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office to probe the potential animal attack that occurred within the Sangre De Cristo Ranches area. Despite their efforts, deputies and CBI officials were unable to locate any animals in the immediate vicinity that could be linked to the attack.

As investigations continue, the sheriff's office advises residents to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings to ensure their safety in light of this tragic event.
