Dunwoody officer okay after head-on crash with suspected drunk driver going the wrong way

DUNWOODY, Ga. -- A Dunwoody police officer is safe after a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver who was traveling the wrong way on Ashford Dunwoody Road. The incident occurred overnight, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
The situation began when a concerned citizen reported a driver sleeping at the wheel near Ashford Dunwoody Road and Hammond Drive. After initial contact with the police, the caller updated them that the driver had started moving. Officers soon located the vehicle heading north in the southbound lanes close to Perimeter Mall.
While one officer managed to avoid a crash with the wrong-way driver, another officer responding a block later at Meadow Lane was not as fortunate. This officer collided head-on with the suspected drunk driver, resulting in injuries reported by both parties at the scene.
Fortunately, the officer was later deemed okay, and the driver was medically cleared for transfer to the DeKalb County Jail. The driver faces multiple charges, including DUI and other traffic violations, and it was discovered that he also had an outstanding warrant that was executed upon his arrest.
The Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating the crash, with 11Alive crews providing coverage of the damaged vehicles on scene overnight.
