Officer 'okay' after head-on collision with suspected drunk driver, Dunwoody police say

DUNWOODY, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A Dunwoody police officer involved in a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver early Sunday morning is reported to be fine, according to the police department. The incident began when a witness alerted authorities about a vehicle that appeared to be inoperable, with the driver seemingly asleep at the wheel at the intersection of Ashford Dunwoody Road and Hammond Drive.
As the situation unfolded, the witness called back to inform police that the vehicle had started moving again. An officer, who was in the vicinity, spotted the car traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Ashford Dunwoody Road. While one officer managed to swerve and avoid crashing into the vehicle, another officer driving southbound was unable to do so, resulting in a head-on collision.
Initial reports indicated that only the police officer and the suspected drunk driver experienced injuries. The Georgia State Patrol was called to the scene to conduct an investigation into the crash. Fortunately, the officer sustained no serious injuries and remained able to carry out their responsibilities.
The suspected drunk driver was subsequently taken to the hospital for medical treatment before being placed under arrest. The police department confirmed the driver faced charges for DUI and several traffic violations, in addition to having an active warrant that was served upon their recovery.
Following medical clearance, the suspect was transported to the DeKalb County Jail. The police department emphasized adherence to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office policy, which mandates medical clearance for all incoming arrestees, regardless of injury status.
