DUNWOODY, Ga. - A Dunwoody police officer is doing well after a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver early Saturday morning. The incident unfolded around 5 a.m. when a witness reported a driver appearing to be asleep at the wheel of a Mercedes near the intersection of Ashford Dunwoody Road and Hammond Drive.

Shortly after the initial call, the witness informed authorities that the driver had regained consciousness and resumed driving. An officer managed to spot the vehicle traveling the wrong way on Ashford Dunwoody Road, prompting them to swerve to avoid a collision. Unfortunately, the second responding officer was not as fortunate and was struck head-on by the vehicle.

Both the officer and the driver sustained injuries but were subsequently treated. The driver received medical clearance at a local hospital before facing legal consequences, including an active warrant for arrest and charges of DUI, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, and a seatbelt violation.

The Georgia State Patrol is now leading the investigation into the incident. As the situation develops, further details may arise regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash and the actions taken by law enforcement.
