Former NFL player LeShon Johnson has been indicted for allegedly running a significant dogfighting operation, leading to the seizure of 190 dogs—the largest amount ever taken from a single individual in a federal dogfighting investigation, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The indictments include charges of possessing pit bull-type dogs for use in an animal fighting venture, as well as selling and transporting dogs for the same purpose.

The dogs were seized from Johnson in October 2024, as he allegedly operated a dogfighting operation named "Mal Kant Kennels" in Broken Arrow and Haskell, Oklahoma. The seriousness of the charges has drawn attention from authorities, emphasizing the cruel nature of animal abuse and the commitment to prosecute such offenders rigorously.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that abuse against animals is both cruel and depraved, promising that the Department of Justice would pursue the case to the fullest extent possible. Johnson’s history reveals a troubling past; he previously pleaded guilty to state animal fighting charges in 2004, receiving a five-year deferred sentence.

Reports indicate that Johnson bred dogs with impressive fight records and sold both "stud rights" and their offspring to other dogfighters, contributing to the growth of the dogfighting industry across the U.S. This illegal operation was financially lucrative for Johnson, with serious implications for animal welfare.

If found guilty, Johnson faces significant penalties, including up to five years in prison for each count and potential fines reaching $250,000. The FBI, recognizing the links between animal cruelty and broader organized criminal activities, has underscored its commitment to eradicating violent behaviors against animals as part of a larger initiative.
