HAMMOND, Ind. – A person of interest is in custody following a shooting that left two dead and three injured at Portside Pub in Northwest Indiana early Sunday morning. Police responded to reports of gunfire around 4 a.m. and discovered five victims at the scene, with two dying from their injuries.

Among the deceased was a bartender at the pub, and a woman identified as Lorraine Reyna. Friends expressed their shock, sharing that they had gathered to celebrate a birthday, now turned into tragedy. Johnny Jernigan, a close friend of Reyna, lamented, "It's very far from a celebration. I'm very, very, very mad."

Investigators revealed that four of the victims had attempted to intervene in a domestic dispute that escalated into violence. Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott emphasized the victims were acting as Good Samaritans, highlighting the senseless nature of the attack.

Currently, three victims are receiving medical attention; two are in serious condition while one is stable. Family members, like Paola Gaeta, are grappling with the aftermath, as she reported searching for her brother, who was injured in the incident.

As authorities continue their investigation, they urge anyone with information to come forward. While a southbound lane of Indianapolis Boulevard remains closed for the inquiry, the community mourns the loss, with flowers placed at the pub's entrance as a tribute to the victims.
