SAN ANTONIO - Ruben Cantu, 63, has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 42-year-old Ricky Marquez on February 2 at a bar on Commercial Avenue. Cantu faces charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center following his arrest on Saturday.

The shooting occurred during a family birthday gathering when an unidentified man, reportedly intoxicated and causing a disturbance, was cut off from the bar. After staff asked the group to leave, a large fight ensued outside, which culminated in someone firing a gun, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. By the time police arrived, Marquez had already sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen, while another victim was taken to a hospital with an injury to his thigh.

Witnesses provided consistent descriptions of the shooter, identifying him as "an older, heavy set" man in a black and white checkered shirt. Surveillance footage from the bar included a man matching this description, and a witness later identified Cantu as the shooter after viewing a photo lineup alongside the video. Additional witnesses, including a friend of Cantu and a bar security guard, corroborated his involvement.

Before police could apprehend Cantu, he fled the scene in a beige or silver Chevrolet Tahoe. A subsequent report highlighted threats made against Cantu, in which he reportedly admitted to killing someone and wounding another during an exchange with an acquaintance. This led to further investigations that linked him to the bar shooting.

Cantu's arrest stems from a combination of witness testimonies and surveillance evidence, painting a clearer picture of the incident that led to Marquez's tragic death. The ongoing investigation continues to focus on the details surrounding the altercation and escalation that resulted in the shooting.
