On Sunday, March 30, Saginaw police were involved in a critical incident that resulted in the shooting death of a 33-year-old man during a standoff, which authorities classified as a "suicide by cop" situation. The encounter took place around 7 p.m. on Delaware Street, near the intersection with State Street, after police received reports of a man armed with a knife who was reportedly threatening suicide by provoking law enforcement.

"Suicide by cop" refers to a scenario in which an individual engages police in a manner intended to force them to use lethal force. Saginaw Deputy Chief Matthew Gerow noted that officers initially attempted to de-escalate the situation, but their efforts were hampered as multiple taser shots failed to subdue the man.

Faced with a dangerous scenario, officers were compelled to use their firearms in self-defense. Following the shooting, police worked to provide life-saving assistance and called for medical help.

The man was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Saginaw Police Chief Robert Ruth requested that state police conduct an investigation into the shooting.

No officers were reported injured during the incident, and the identity of the deceased has yet to be released by officials.
