GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Maurice Andre Henry, 32, was arrested early on March 30 after allegedly attempting to take a vehicle from a Lyft driver. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., when Henry, who was reportedly intoxicated, grabbed the driver by the neck while insisting that he pull over. The Lyft driver, who speaks only Spanish, was following the address given by Henry when the situation escalated.

While driving toward Earl Apartments, Henry became aggressive, trying to climb into the front seat and taking control of the steering wheel. Despite his intoxication, he was able to push the driver out of the vehicle and attempt to take over the operation of the car by pressing the gas pedal. However, the driver quickly reacted by pulling the car to the side of the road.

After exiting the vehicle, the driver managed to keep the key fob and turned off the car after hearing Henry trying to put it in gear. He recorded a video of Henry re-entering the driver's seat before police arrived. The responding Gainesville Police officer noted that the driver had abrasions on his neck from the altercation.

During questioning, Henry explained that he had taken a rideshare option after consuming alcohol and believed the driver was taking him off-route, which caused him to fear for his safety. Initially, he denied touching the driver but claimed he thought he was being "kidnapped." Throughout his statements, he wavered regarding his position in the vehicle and his recollection of events.

Henry is facing charges of battery and attempted grand theft of a motor vehicle, with no previous criminal history recorded. Judge Craig DeThomasis has set his bail at $2,000.
