Der finnische Reaktor #Olkiluoto3 – das pro Megawatt teuerste jemals in Europa errichtete Kraftwerk – hat nach seiner problematischen Bauphase etwas (für Atomkraftgegner sic!) Unerwartetes gezeigt: Sobald ein Kernkraftwerk in Betrieb ist, läuft es mit einer Zuverlässigkeit und CO₂-Armut, die von keiner anderen Stromquelle erreicht werden; die finnischen Strompreise spiegeln diese Tatsache seit der Inbetriebnahme Monat für Monat wider. Olkiluoto 3 ging im April 2023 ans Netz, nach einer Bauzeit von 18 Jahren und Kosten von rund 11 Milliarden in Betrieb. Die Zahlen zu Verzögerung und Kostenüberschreitung sind hinlänglich dokumentiert. Weitaus weniger Beachtung findet jedoch das, was seither geschehen ist. In den ersten zwölf Monaten des kommerziellen Betriebs erzeugte OL3 9,6 Terawattstunden Strom – das entsprach 98 % der theoretischen Höchstleistung. Ein Kapazitätsfaktor von nahezu 98 % ist nach jedem weltweiten Maßstab und für jede Technologie außergewöhnlich. Damit übertraf der Reaktor die Leistung der beiden bereits bestehenden finnischen Reaktoren, die ihrerseits regelmäßig jährliche Kapazitätsfaktoren von über 90 % erreichen. Im ersten Betriebsjahr lief der Reaktor 340 Tage lang durchgehend, ohne planmäßige oder ungeplante Abschaltung. Die Auswirkungen auf den Strommarkt waren unmittelbar und erheblich. Die finnischen Großhandelsstrompreise lagen 2023 im Durchschnitt bei 57 Euro pro Megawattstunde – 40 % unter dem Niveau von 2022, das durch die europäische Gaskrise geprägt war. Die kontinuierliche, CO₂-freie Grundlast von 1.600 MW aus OL3 verdrängte rund 6 Millionen Tonnen CO₂, die andernfalls durch Kohle- und Gasimporte entstanden wären. Der Bau von OL3 war ein warnendes Beispiel. Sein Betrieb ist eine ganz andere Geschichte.
