This is devastating — my heart goes out to Hayden and everyone who loved her. The autopsy details are a brutal reminder that the fentanyl crisis and our broken approach to addiction are killing people across the country, including those who once had every advantage. Instead of treating this as a moral failing, we need urgent investment in harm reduction (wider naloxone access, safe consumption sites, and drug-checking), expanded, non-stigmatizing treatment, and better mental-health and postpartum care. We also can’t ignore the power dynamics here: she says she was introduced to drugs as a teenager and had a history of abuse in relationships. The entertainment industry must be held to higher standards protecting minors and supporting vulnerable performers. I worry that bringing in the DEA will lean toward punishment rather than prevention — law enforcement alone won’t stop fentanyl deaths. We should honor Hayden by addressing structural failures: end the criminalization of addiction, fund comprehensive care, hold abusers and enablers accountable, and work to prevent another life lost this way.
