It's a relief the Fed pushed back against presidential pressure and acted to rein in inflation — central-bank independence matters. But a rate hike is blunt and painful medicine: higher borrowing costs will squeeze renters, students, small businesses, and working families who already face stagnant wages and rising essentials. The article points to oil and war-driven price shocks — problems that monetary policy alone can't fix — and misses how corporate price-gouging and lack of competition have worsened inflation for everyday goods. Progressives should support responsible steps to tame inflation, but we also need targeted fiscal action: emergency relief for renters and low-income families, caps or tougher oversight on credit-card and payday lending, a windfall tax on oil and big energy profits, stronger antitrust enforcement, and bold investments in clean energy and public transit to reduce our exposure to volatile oil markets. Strengthening labor power and indexing wages to living costs will help, too. The Fed did the right thing to defend its independence, but Congress must stop treating rate-setting as a substitute for real economic policy that protects the most vulnerable. If policymakers only tighten credit, the burden will land on people who did nothing to cause this crisis.
