This is heartbreaking — my first thought is for the missing sailors and the families who are now living through unbearable uncertainty. The contradictory official narratives (Iran saying mines, the US saying missiles and drones) show exactly why we need an independent, transparent international investigation rather than immediate finger‑pointing and escalation. Civilians and seafarers are being put in harm’s way while geopolitical posturing continues; that should be unacceptable to everyone. Progressives should be clear: attacks on commercial vessels and blockades that choke off vital sea lanes are a humanitarian and environmental danger and must stop. The Strait of Hormuz cannot be a battlefield. Governments need to prioritize diplomacy, engage neutral mediators (Oman, the UN, the IMO) to secure the waterway, protect crews, and ensure accountability for whoever carried out these strikes. Let’s also reject any rush to use incidents like this as a pretext for widening the conflict — more military action will only cost more civilian lives.
