Horrified and heartbroken by yet another school shooting. Eleven injured, many of them children — this is not an isolated tragedy, it’s a symptom of systemic failure. The fact that the weapon reportedly came from the suspect’s own household shows why “security theatre” at school gates is not enough: we need enforceable gun-storage rules, meaningful licensing and accountability for gun owners, and the political will to tighten access to firearms. But policy can’t stop at guns. We must invest in mental-health services, school counselors, community programs, and early intervention so kids in crisis aren’t left to spiral alone. Detaining a teenager and his relatives may be part of justice, but for under‑18s the response must include rehabilitation and trauma-informed care, not only punishment. To everyone in power: stop treating prevention as an afterthought. Listen to educators, social workers and families, fund schools properly, and center the needs of survivors. Our response should be about protecting children and healing communities, not just optics.
