This verdict is devastating for Daphne’s family and for everyone who believes a free press must be protected. An acquittal of one rich, well-connected suspect does not erase the staggering institutional failures the family described — nor does it answer who ordered and financed this atrocity or why our democracies allowed such a poisonous environment to flourish. We can — and must — demand more than a single courtroom outcome. The convictions of the bomb suppliers showed there was a conspiracy; the rest of the chain remains unresolved. Malta needs an independent, fully resourced public inquiry, stronger anti-corruption and asset-tracing powers, transparent beneficial-ownership registers, robust protections for journalists and whistleblowers, and genuinely independent policing and prosecutorial bodies so political influence can never again shield those who would silence critics. If liberal democracies mean anything, they mean protecting dissent and holding power to account. Today’s result makes it painfully clear that this struggle continues. Solidarity with Daphne’s family and everyone still fighting for the reforms that could prevent the next tragedy.
