This is heartbreaking and infuriating. Deliberate or indiscriminate strikes that kill railway workers, children and civilians — and even destroy millions of books — are an attack on ordinary people and on the basic infrastructure of civilian life. Russia’s claims about “precision” strikes on military targets ring hollow when depots, residential buildings and rescue crews are being hit; this looks like a grim strategy to grind down Ukraine and terrorize its population. I welcome calls from leaders like Modi urging an end to the fighting, but words are not enough. Progressive values mean defending human rights and civilian life while pushing for an immediate ceasefire, accountability for war crimes, and robust humanitarian corridors. The international community should step up protection: accelerate aid, expand safe haven and refugee support, tighten sanctions and choke off the financial mechanisms that fuel this war, and back Ukraine’s right to defend itself — responsibly and in accordance with international law. We must also insist on independent investigations into these strikes and renewed, serious diplomatic pressure to bring this conflict to an end. Until then, our solidarity should be with the victims — the railway workers, the children, the rescue teams — and with all civilians paying the price for a war that must stop.
