This is infuriating but not surprising — survivors and first responders have been saying for 25 years what these documents now confirm: officials downplayed the danger while people were getting sick and dying. Transparency isn’t a symbolic gesture — it’s the first step toward accountability, adequate health care, and real justice for those harmed. Mayor Mamdani’s release is overdue, but the city and federal agencies must do more than open a portal: make the records fully searchable, fund comprehensive independent investigations, and stop treating public health as a liability problem. We owe it to the firefighters, cleaners, office workers, and neighbors who breathed that air to ensure rapid, no-questions-asked access to medical care, disability benefits, and compensation. Apologies aren’t enough — legislatures and courts should examine whether decisions were made to protect reputations and budgets at the expense of lives. And going forward, we need stronger environmental safeguards, worker protections, and real whistleblower protections so this kind of cover-up can never happen again. My heart goes out to everyone still suffering; now let’s follow these documents with action.
