It’s grimly hilarious that our government’s McCarthyist crackdowns on opposition have got so bad, so idiotic and so malicious that they may have now bullshat themselves into prosecuting the national security advisor’s wife for a terrorist offence, over a tweet.

It’s just a display of force. Fuck you: we are in charge and we decide. Don’t like it? Fuck you again. And there’s no major dissent about it because the whole project sprang from the press themselves. This is their riot, so of course they approve and want more. Much more, in fact.

The original form of McCarthyism didn’t stop because the US political class discovered a sense of decency. It ended because it was targeted at the army: real people, who matter. If drunken Joe had the sense to just stick to harassing writers and actors, he could’ve kept going indefinitely.

It’s helpful to have an actual Labour MP saying right out that it’s not what transgender people do or say that is the problem: it’s their presence that she objects to, their existence. Yes, this is what it always was, and these people just keep winding each other up and up to ever more extreme views

Perhaps the head of the British Army should not be doing media appearances instructing the public to accept massive benefit cuts? Perhaps he should be fired for doing that, and replaced by a different Rupert who will keep his nose out of politics.

Can we crack down hard on the constant fascist street rioting, arson and seizure of vital infrastructure *before* we start drafting citizens’ militias? Because otherwise, I can see how those things might get quietly amalgamated, whether under this government or the next one.

It is quite something that we’re entering year four of “is racism making the public dislike these crimes against humanity” while Neo Nazis advise on antiracism, the press debate whether black peoole can be English and MPs talk about being terrified transgenders might attack their elderly relatives.

Again, there was almost no public element in this: no organic surge in public opinion to demand it. It was simply imposed upon Britain by the world’s most hateful and poisonous media outlets, by leaning hard on our ever-compliant political leaders, who are always happy to say yes to the tabloids.

A helpfully clarifying intervention here from a politician who is firmly within the mainstream, on what views are unacceptable
