George Monbiot
This, by @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social, is the best analysis/celebration I've read so far of the mid-term results, and of the need to reject the "the appeasing, pseudo-centrist version of the Democratic Party" in favour of a courageous reconstruction. www.meditationsinanemergency.com/that-was-glo...
I remember when Gordon Brown cut 31,000 staff from the tax service and slashed the budget for fighting tax avoidance by 48%, to "save money". Cameron then cut HMRC by a further 15%. At the time, I remarked "It’s like cutting your household bills by deciding to stop commuting to work." Utter madness.
Once they started digging this hole, the only way they could go was down. And still the police and government are digging. They'll see kangaroos soon. novaramedia.com/2026/10/30/p...

This is yet another disgraceful attempt by the British government to suppress free speech. Those who contest the genocide in Gaza are treated as threats to the public realm, while those who prosecute, aid and abet it are welcomed with open arms. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
@carolinevoadenmp.bsky.social is my MP. I know her well. It is frankly impossible to believe Reform UK's insinuation that she behaved aggressively towards Nigel Farage. But it's all too easy to believe that Farage behaved aggressively towards her. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
There's another way of putting this: "Markets prefer fascists" www.economist.com/leaders/2026...
Monstrous beyond all reckoning. The US is using remote sensing *designed for humanitarian purposes* for the opposite purpose, potentially drowning civilians en masse. Trump hates Somalis. His troops appear to be exploiting the weather to help slaughter them. www.theguardian.com/global-devel...
Bolsonaro's loss is not just a loss for Bolsonaro. It's a loss for Trump. For Musk. For Milei. For Netanyahu. For Farage. For Meta and Zuckerberg. For the meat barons, the fossil fuel corporations, and the rest of the neocolonial looters. And it is a massive win for humanity and the living planet.
This is horrific. And unsurprisingly the work of a "conservative" multimillionaire. Other adjectives might include creepy, prurient, dictatorial and abusive, not to mention, of course, transphobic. Once more with feeling: we need to get the money out of politics. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
I warned 3 years ago that mink farms are a likely route to a new and horrific human pandemic, and once more I'm fervently praying it doesn't map out that way. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
They smashed the globe. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
Let’s eradicate our life support systems – that’ll teach the liberals! It's not just about giving destructive industries what they want, important as this is. The likes of Trump and Bolsonaro will kill the planet out of a vengeful desire to hurt. My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
