Dearie me. Are the TFA suggesting no land should ever go on the market…?

All good questions, but my view on this is - land redistribution does require compensation! There’s compensation paid if the government compulsorily purchases land, and community buyouts in Scotland still pay the landowner for the land. The more important questions, I think, are:

This is great. But how did it come to be in the Duke's possession? And does he need or deserve £30m?

Thanks so much Marc. Appreciated!

Job done, Guy. Thanks as always for the work you've done and do in this area. It really is time we have complete dataset, and that it's freely available. It'll be interesting to see where the government lands on this. The carve outs will be key.

If implemented, the proposals could tell us who owns up to 95% of England and Wales – whilst screening out residential properties by using an area threshold. I’ve campaigned on this for over ten years. But big landowners could still scupper these plans... www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

The government proposes releasing a new, free public dataset identifying the owners of significant landholdings, which “will cover the vast majority of land in England and Wales whilst excluding ordinary homeowners.” This is huge. We have to get this over the line. www.gov.uk/government/c...

Could centuries of secrecy about who owns our land soon end? A new government consultation proposes revealing who owns up to 95% of England and Wales. To stop this being blocked by big landowners, I need your help to send in supportive evidence. Here’s how: whoownsengland.org/2026/10/27/c...
