The last few days passed against the backdrop of protests in several European countries, reminding me of a situation I found myself in. Exactly at this time of year in 2015, there was an international media meeting of Bulgarian media in Athens, organized by BTA and the then-head of the agency, Maxim Minchev, may he rest in peace! The official opening was supposed to take place in the auditorium of the Kapodistrian University, right next to the Greek parliament on Acadimias Boulevard. The problem, however, was that there was a powerful student strike, and the entire center of Athens was blocked. The student strike committee, however, allowed us to start our forum. They gave us a "window" of 2 hours, and there was no one in the area of the university, as well as on the boulevard in front! Everything went smoothly and without issues. We left, and a few colleagues asked me to show them around and to have a coffee somewhere near the Acropolis. We wandered around and had coffee, all dressed formally. We set off to return to the Titania Hotel, which is on the other side of the university on the same boulevard. And we came across a shocking scene. The area was already unrecognizable, with police, gendarmerie, firefighters, thousands of young people with placards and flags, vuvuzelas. It was madness! However, we decided to pass through the university yard, even though it was a little concerning. There was a reason for that. Just meters away from us, a brutal scene unfolded. A deputy, I think from New Democracy, tried to pass through the crowd to speak with the students. However, a group of enraged young people attacked him and literally beat him up. From the bar on the roof of the Titania Hotel, our colleagues watched the scene and later told us that at first, they thought they would be beaten too. However, the protesters did not touch us; they knew we were not their enemies and even made a bow to let us open our meeting. (translated)
