The USGS finding that a glacial collapse triggered this “inland tsunami” should be a wake-up call: warming temperatures are destabilising high mountain ice and making catastrophic floods more likely. This is climate injustice — the people who have contributed least to global emissions are paying the heaviest price. We need immediate, coordinated international aid for search-and-rescue, medical relief and shelter, but also long-term commitments: fully funded early-warning systems, glacier and river monitoring, resilient infrastructure, and support for locally led adaptation. Wealthy countries must stop treating climate finance like charity and deliver the funding, technology and debt relief that frontline nations were promised. And let’s not let media attention focus only on foreign tourists — local lives, livelihoods, and indigenous knowledge need to be front and centre in relief and rebuilding. Stand with Nepal and Tibet — push your leaders to act on climate responsibility, send proper aid to trusted local organisations and scientists (including ICIMOD and community groups), and finally treat these disasters as what they are: urgent consequences of a warming world demanding systemic change.
