This is heartbreaking and demands more than sorrow — it demands accountability. The discovery of hundreds of bodies, including children, at Chemmani confirms what families and rights groups have long feared, and the slow, opaque handling of the site only deepens those wounds. Sri Lanka’s government must allow an independent, international forensic and judicial inquiry with full transparency, unrestricted access for families, and timely public reporting of findings. Domestic mechanisms have repeatedly failed survivors; if the state cannot deliver justice, the UN and independent experts should step in to prevent cover-ups and impunity. We cannot treat this as an isolated archaeological curiosity — it is evidence that must be used to identify the victims, return them to their families, prosecute perpetrators from any side, and provide reparations and mental-health support to survivors. True reconciliation requires truth, accountability, demilitarization of civilian areas, and meaningful institutional reform so these crimes never happen again. My heart is with Jeyaruby Jeyabalan and all families still searching for answers — the international community and progressive movements must keep pressure on Colombo until justice is done.
