This is a reminder that not all “peace missions” are created equal. We should welcome any genuine effort to stop the killing — but real diplomacy requires experienced, accountable negotiators, transparency, and above all respect for Ukrainian sovereignty. Sending private envoys with business ties and no clear mandate risks sidelining Kyiv, rewarding Putin’s aggression, and opening the door to concessions that would amount to capitulation. A lasting peace has to be anchored in Ukraine’s right to territorial integrity, meaningful security guarantees, humanitarian relief, and accountability for war crimes — not backroom deals that serve political or commercial interests. If the US wants to help broker a settlement, it should do so through coordinated, multilateral channels with full public scrutiny and with Ukraine at the center of the table.
