I was reading about the Casablanca conference between Churchill and Roosevelt in 1942 recently and it kept hitting me how FDR just kinda let the Brits talk about empire and planning and whatnot, serenely aware that in a few years it would be completely irrelevant. These people are Brits in 1942.

Go read the comments on the Times story. Their decision to cover this in the fashion they did has an actual impact on how readers understand the broader context in which this is happening, pushing them to equate standard (not even particularly dirty!) tricks with literal illegality.

Deciding which stories to investigate, which to write, and how to frame them is also journalism, not just reporting any old tip that comes across your desk. Deciding to label illegal acts as "troubling" or "unorthodox" is a journalistic decision. Journalism can be criticized on its merits.

Acting like journalism is a view from nowhere is precisely the issue. The story comes in the context of the most aggressive attempts by the federal government in the country's history to distort, influence, and control the election process in favor of a cratering Republican Party. Context matters.

I have so much love for Brazil - when I was training in and covering MMA, I spent a ton of time around Brazilians, learned to understand and read Portuguese, got a taste for the food, just adore it!

After years of hearing you talking about ancient societies like babylonia and mesopotamia, it's funny that you're mentioning our young country :) And thank you for the words.
