Σαν σήμερα 14/08/1996, δολοφονείται άνανδρα επάνω στον ιστό από τους Τούρκους ο 26χρονος ηρωομάρτυρας Σολωμού Σολωμός. Tην ημέρα της κηδείας του Tάσου Iσαάκ, στις 14 Αυγούστου 1996, ημέρα μνήμης της κατάληψης της Aμμοχώστου, μία ομάδα από διαδηλωτές κατευθύνθηκαν προς το οδόφραγμα της Δερύνειας για να εναποθέσουν στεφάνια και λουλούδια στο χώρο της δολοφονίας. Η σκηνή μετατράπηκε σε πεδίο μάχης, όταν εμφανίστηκε μια ομάδα «γκρίζων λύκων» και άρχισαν τον πετροπόλεμο. Ξαφνικά ξεπετάχτηκε μπροστά από τους διαδηλωτές ο Σολωμός Σολωμού και ξεφεύγοντας από τους Κυανόκρανους πέρασε στη νεκρή ζώνη και προσπάθησε ν΄ ανέβει σε έναν ιστό για να κατεβάσει την τουρκική σημαία, ενώ άλλοι διαδηλωτές προσπάθησαν να τον αποτρέψουν. Tούρκοι ελεύθεροι σκοπευτές από το απέναντι τουρκικό φυλάκιο τον πυροβόλησαν και ο Σολωμός Σολωμού έπεσε νεκρός από σφαίρα στο λαιμό. Στη συνέχεια άρχισαν να ρίχνουν προς τους διαδηλωτές. Oι εθνοφρουροί πήραν θέση μάχης. H σορός του Σολωμού απομακρύνθηκε από την περιοχή. Επίσης, αρκετά ακόμα άτομα τραυματίστηκαν από τις σφαίρες των Tούρκων στο χώρο του επεισοδίου. Σύμφωνα με τις Ελληνοκυπριακές αρχές, ένας από τους δολοφόνους του Σολωμού Σολωμού, ήταν και ο Kενάν Aκίν, έποικος, πρώην αξιωματικός του τουρκικού στρατού, υπουργός του ψευδοκράτους και πράκτορας των Tουρκικών μυστικών Δυνάμεων. Ομάδα ανακριτών του Αρχηγείου Αστυνομίας και της Αστυνομικής Διεύθυνσης Αμμόχωστου, μετά από συντονισμένες εξετάσεις, εντόπισαν τους δράστες εναντίον των οποίων εκδόθηκαν διεθνή εντάλματα σύλληψης. Το υλικό που εξασφαλίσθηκε χρησιμοποιήθηκε για προσφυγή στο Ευρωπαϊκό Δικαστήριο Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων εναντίον της Τουρκίας.
