El Gobierno acaba de autorizar que las dos unidades de la central nuclear de Almaraz continúen operando hasta el 8 de junio de 2030, ampliando 31 meses la vida de Almaraz I y 19 meses la de Almaraz II. La decisión llega después del informe favorable del Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear y el propio Gobierno ofrece argumentos que llevamos mucho tiempo defendiendo quienes conocemos la importancia de la energía nuclear para España. La situación internacional está provocando volatilidad en los precios de los combustibles fósiles y mantener Almaraz reduce nuestra exposición al gas. Además, su continuidad apenas afectará al despliegue renovable previsto para 2030, con una reducción estimada del 1,4%, mientras permitirá disminuir un 7% la generación con ciclos combinados de gas. Y hay un argumento especialmente importante: Red Eléctrica, como operador del sistema, señala que la continuidad de Almaraz aporta estabilidad al sistema eléctrico en un contexto de incertidumbre global. Enresa, por su parte, considera que los residuos adicionales serán poco significativos y no requerirán ampliar las instalaciones de almacenamiento previstas. Es una magnífica noticia para Extremadura, para sus trabajadores y para todo el sistema eléctrico español. Almaraz seguirá produciendo electricidad abundante, estable y sin emisiones de CO₂ durante casi cuatro años más. Hoy toca celebrarlo.
