Plato had gewoon gelijk. We horen vaak dat democratie het beste politieke systeem is dat we hebben. Maar is dat zo? meer dan 2.400 jaar geleden waarschuwde de Griekse filosoof Plato al voor een fundamentele weeffout van dit systeem. En als je vandaag de dag naar het politieke landschap kijkt, is zijn analyse actueler dan ooit. Plato stelde in zijn meesterwerk 'De Staat' dat een democratie bijna nooit kiest voor de meest wijze of deskundige leider. En dat blijkt. Sterker nog, de meest wijze deskundige leiders stellen zich niet eens kandidaat! Omdat de waarheid vaak complex en oncomfortabel is. En de politieke arena gevuld is met mensen waarmee het onmogelijk is om samen te werken. Door gebrek aan kennis en ervaring. Door gebrek aan niveau. In een democratie, zo beargumenteerde hij, en zo blijkt ook in de praktijk, wint de politicus die het beste kan vleien, manipuleren en misleiden. Niet de beste leider maar de beste leugenaar wordt gekozen. De man of vrouw die de perceptie het best beheerst en het volk precies vertelt wat het wil horen — ongeacht of het waar is. Met zijn beroemde 'Scheepsgelijkenis' legde hij dit uit: een schip laat je toch ook besturen door een ervaren kapitein die kan navigeren, en niet door de populairste matroos die de passagiers gratis drank belooft? In een tijdperk van “metaforen”, filterbubbels, soundbites, geheugenverlies, interpretatieverschillen en het “wegwerken van achterstanden” kunnen we er eigenlijk niet meer omheen: Plato had gewoon gelijk en zag de valkuilen van onze moderne democratie eeuwen geleden al. De vraag is niet hoe we het oplossen, maar of dit op te lossen is? Het begint met een stem niet alleen op basis van een programma maar ook op basis van de kwaliteit van de kieslijst te bepalen. Waarbij betrouwbaarheid en integriteit ver boven retoriek moeten gaan. Het begint bij de kiezer dus. En degenen die de kandidaten aan het woord laten. De Pers. Een verkiezingsdebat waarbij leiderschap wordt getoetst ipv dossierkennis en ingestudeerde one liners?
