De vele petten van viroloog Marion Koopmans @MarionKoopmans en wat dat zegt over de Nederlandse media en academische vrijheid. In het najaar van 2025 woonde ik het congres 'Back to the Future' van het Artsencollectief @ArtsenC bij in Zeist. Het collectief ontstond in 2020 als reactie op een brandbrief van twee medisch specialisten die vonden dat de coronamaatregelen meer schade aanrichtten dan het virus zelf. Op dat congres sprak de jonge arts en immunoloog dr. Jona Walk @JonaWalk over academische vrijheid. Haar verhaal werd met een staande ovatie ontvangen. Dr. Robert Malone @RWMaloneMD sprak haar bemoedigend toe omdat ook hij de nodige verkettering over zich heen heeft gehad, als uitvinder van de mRNA technologie. Diezelfde verkettering viel Jona Walk de afgelopen jaren ten deel. Voor artsen zoals dr. Walk was er geen academische vrijheid, ze werd en wordt dagelijks belachelijk gemaakt en daar niet tegen beschermd. Deze blog schrijf ik om te verduidelijken hoe de censuur in Nederland in zijn werk gaat. Het is een ragfijn spel tussen factcheckers, journalisten en mensen als Koopmans zelf. Marion Koopmans zit zelf in de 'Denktank Desinformatie' die de macht heeft critici te censureren en te laten aanvallen. De maandagochtend na het congres reageerde viroloog Marion Koopmans op X op een post van journalist Maarten Keulemans (die het congres net zomin als Koopmans had bijgewoond). Ze schreef min of meer dat Jona Walk 'voorlopig' nog overal haar 'ver-van-consensus standpunten' kon uitdragen. Die opmerking – na een presentatie waar ze zelf niet bij was – komt dreigend over. Koopmans suggereert hiermee dat kritische standpunten tijdelijk worden getolereerd, maar dat dit geen vanzelfsprekendheid is. Dat past niet bij wetenschap, waarin juist het stellen van vragen en het toetsen van hypotheses centraal staan. Marion Koopmans is hoogleraar virologie aan het Erasmus MC. Dat is haar core business. Maar tijdens de coronacrisis droeg ze meerdere petten tegelijk en dat werd zelden expliciet benoemd in de media. Ze was lid van het Outbreak Management Team (OMT) en adviseerde het kabinet over lockdowns, mondkapjes, avondklok, testbeleid en later over de vaccinatiestrategie. Ze adviseerde vanaf maart 2020 de Europese Commissie over het coronabeleid. Ze maakte deel uit van het WHO-team dat in 2020-2021 in Wuhan onderzoek deed naar de herkomst van SARS-CoV-2. Ze is initiatiefnemer en scientific director van het Pandemic & Disaster Preparedness Center (PDPC), een belangrijk instituut voor toekomstige pandemische paraatheid. En – cruciaal – ze had zitting in de Denktank Desinformatie, een overheidsgerelateerd overleg dat zich bezighield met het signaleren en bestrijden van 'desinformatie', waaronder kritiek op het coronabeleid en de vaccins. Dat laatste is geen kleinigheid. Terwijl critici – artsen, wetenschappers en burgers – vaak werden weggezet als 'complotdenkers' of 'anti-vaxxers', zat een vooraanstaand OMT-lid mee aan tafel bij een denktank die invloed had op welke informatie wel of niet als problematisch werd gezien. Maar er is meer waarover Koopmans zwijgt en wat wél relevant is. Al op 1 februari 2020 nam Koopmans deel aan een vertrouwelijke teleconferentie met onder anderen viroloog Ron Fouchier, Duitse viroloog Kristian Andersen, Eddie Holmes en anderen, waarbij Anthony Fauci en Francis Collins aanwezig waren. In vrijgegeven e-mails van die periode schreef ze op 9 februari 2020 in essentie dat de hypothese van een laboratoriumlek beter niet in de publieke discussie moest worden gebracht, omdat dat 'backfire' kon geven of als 'kijk, zij dachten het ook' zou worden gelezen. Kort daarna verscheen het invloedrijke artikel Proximal Origin in Nature Medicine, dat de lab-leak-hypothese sterk relativeerde. De privé overwegingen van de mogelijkheid van een lablek werden niet transparant naar buiten gebracht. Terwijl het juist van groot belang is om te weten waar een nieuw virus vandaan komt – zeker als er in Wuhan gain-of-function-achtig onderzoek plaatsvond. Het is typerend voor de Nederlandse media dat Marion Koopmans al in het voorjaar van 2020 als dé expert werd neergezet. Niet alleen als viroloog, maar ook als autoriteit op het gebied van maatregelen, vaccins, maatschappelijke impact en later zelfs desinformatie. Ze was overal: talkshows, kranten, radio. Haar petten stapelden zich op, maar de media stelden zelden kritische vragen over mogelijke belangenverstrengeling of over de vraag of één persoon al die rollen tegelijk kon vervullen zonder dat onafhankelijkheid in het geding kwam. Wetenschap is geen consensusmachine. Consensus is een tijdelijk resultaat van debat en bewijs, geen doel op zich. Zodra afwijkende hypotheses (zoals een mogelijk lablek) actief uit de publieke ruimte worden gehouden, is er geen wetenschap meer, maar beleid met een wetenschappelijk sausje. De geschiedenis laat zien wat er gebeurt als moedige onderzoekers tegen de heersende mening ingaan. John Snow ontdekte in 1854 dat cholera via besmet water werd overgedragen, terwijl de gevestigde wetenschap vasthield aan de miasma-theorie (slechte lucht). Hij werd aanvankelijk genegeerd en tegengewerkt. Jona Walk was de afgelopen jaren in opleiding tot internist-intensivist. Afgelopen voorjaar studeerde ze af. De opleidingssituatie maakt je extra kwetsbaar. Dat een hoogleraar en OMT-lid haar na een lezing over academische vrijheid – zonder de lezing zelf te hebben gehoord – via X afserveert met een opmerking over 'voorlopig' nog kunnen afwijken van de consensus, is geen blijk van wetenschappelijke openheid. Het is een signaal: blijf binnen de lijnen, of je loopt risico. Niet Jona Walk, maar hoogleraar Marion Koopmans en anderen die het woord 'desinformatie' in de mond namen om critici kalt te stellen, hebben het vertrouwen in de wetenschap beschadigd. Onder het mom van 'volg de wetenschap' werden ingrijpende maatregelen genomen waarvan de wetenschappelijke onderbouwing op z’n minst discutabel was en waarbij alternatieve verklaringen (zoals de oorsprong van het virus) bewust werden gemarginaliseerd. Marion Koopmans is een gerespecteerd viroloog met indrukwekkende publicaties. Maar juist omdat ze zoveel petten droeg – adviseur van overheid en Europa, lid van een desinformatiedenktank, deelnemer aan vroege besprekingen over de virusoorsprong én gezicht van de media – had ze extra verantwoordelijk moeten voelen voor transparantie en academische vrijheid. In plaats daarvan illustreert haar reactie op Jona Walk precies het klimaat dat veel artsen en wetenschappers vanaf 2020 ervoeren: kritiek wordt niet beantwoord met argumenten, maar met framing en subtiele dreiging. Wetenschap floreert bij open debat, niet bij 'voorlopig nog even toestaan'. Hier zie je waarom Hugo de Jonge zo gevaarlijk was. Hij bestreed kritische artsen niet met betere argumenten, maar maakte hen maatschappelijk verdacht en professioneel kwetsbaar. Eerst reduceert hij echte artsen tot een vaag clubje “medisch geschoolden”. Daarna noemt hij hun medische oordeel “ondermijnend” en vraagt hij waarom zij überhaupt nog hun vak mogen uitoefenen. Dat is geen debat. Dat is een minister die de gedachte aan beroepsverboden normaliseert voor artsen die zijn beleid tegenspreken. En daarna komt de smerigste truc: de inspectie was zogenaamd volledig onafhankelijk. Natuurlijk gaf hij geen bevel op papier. Dat hoefde ook niet. Een minister die namen noemt, afwijkende artsen als staatsgevaarlijk framet en hun bevoegdheid ter discussie stelt, heeft zijn boodschap allang afgegeven. De bureaucratie doet de rest en de politicus houdt zijn handen schoon. Dat maakt Hugo gevaarlijker dan een schreeuwende autocraat. Hij hoeft niemand openlijk het zwijgen op te leggen. Hij creëert een klimaat waarin artsen begrijpen dat twijfel hun reputatie, inkomen en beroep kan kosten. Daarna presenteert hij de overgebleven stilte als “99, zoveel procent consensus”. Eerst maak je tegenspraak gevaarlijk. Daarna wijs je op het gebrek aan tegenspraak als bewijs dat je gelijk had. Hugo hoefde kritische artsen niet rechtstreeks het zwijgen op te leggen. Het was genoeg om duidelijk te maken dat tegenspraak hun reputatie, inkomen en beroepsregistratie kon kosten. Hugo de Jonge bewaakte tijdens corona niet alleen het beleid. Hij hielp de grenzen bewaken van wat artsen nog mochten denken, zeggen en onderzoeken zonder hun loopbaan te riskeren. Dat is geen leiderschap. Ce pays a besoin d’une alternative au consensus libéral-conservateur qui mise encore plus fort sur un avenir fondé sur des subventions aux entreprises qui détruisent le climat. Statement on the Future of Jammu & Kashmir ( Under Pakistan Occupation) and the 28th Constitutional Amendment I firmly believe that if Pakistan genuinely seeks peace, stability, and democratic governance in the territories under its administration, including so-called Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, it must immediately withdraw the 28th Constitutional Amendment and refrain from any measures that further undermine the political, administrative, and territorial integrity of the region. Any attempt to alter the constitutional status of these territories without the free, prior, and informed consent of their people is contrary to democratic principles and the universally recognized right of peoples to determine their own political future. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are not merely subjects of administrative decisions; they are stakeholders whose voices, aspirations, and rights must be respected. The reported efforts to restructure, divide, or trifurcate the region are deeply concerning. Such actions risk creating further political instability, social unrest, and mistrust among the population. The territorial unity and historical identity of Jammu and Kashmir must not be compromised through unilateral constitutional or administrative measures imposed from above. Peace cannot be achieved through coercive policies, excessive securitization, suppression of dissent, communication restrictions, or the curtailment of civil and political freedoms. Sustainable peace can only emerge through democratic dialogue, respect for fundamental human rights, transparency, accountability, and meaningful participation of the people in decisions affecting their future. The recent developments in Rawalakot and other districts have already heightened tensions and raised serious concerns regarding civil liberties, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and the treatment of peaceful political activists. Instead of imposing constitutional changes and expanding centralized control, the authorities should engage constructively with local communities, political organizations, civil society groups, and human rights defenders. International human rights standards, including the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and international human rights instruments, emphasize the importance of participation, representation, and respect for the wishes of the people. Any constitutional arrangement affecting the future of Jammu and Kashmir should be based on democratic consultation and broad public consensus rather than unilateral imposition. I therefore call upon the Government of Pakistan to: 1. Immediately withdraw the 28th Constitutional Amendment. 2. Abandon any plans aimed at the trifurcation or fragmentation of Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. 3. Respect the democratic and political rights of the people. 4. End policies of intimidation, collective punishment, and restrictions on peaceful political activity. 5. Ensure unrestricted access to essential commodities, healthcare services, communication networks, and humanitarian assistance. 6. Initiate an inclusive dialogue with all genuine stakeholders, including representatives of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. 7. Allow independent national and international human rights observers to assess the situation on the ground.
