A lot of people seem to simply think that if stocks yield an average of about 10% per year (which would mean, for example, that a million euros would generate a hundred thousand per year), then by buying the global index with all that money, one could relatively easily support oneself. However, one often easily forgets things like taxes, inflation, and the risks associated with stocks. In the worst-case scenario, returns can be negative even for a decade. While this is certainly exceptional, the risk feels very real when considering ending a career. A clearly safer option is to invest in bonds, but their biggest risk is usually inflation, which can leave the real return at zero or even negative. Additionally, there are many ways to lose one's investment wealth (e.g., failing to stick to a budget, gambling, trading, scams), and living off savings may not suit everyone. Unfortunately, you cannot know for sure if this applies to you until you try.
