Joakim Vigelius referred to the riots in France and recalled the parliamentary speech of SDP's Tytti Tuppurainen from a couple of years ago. According to him, Tuppurainen had said that France had welcomed immigration from almost all over the world but would still remain France. Vigelius observed that the riots over the weekend showed how much France had changed. He wrote that young men of immigrant backgrounds had looted and destroyed property, set buildings on fire, and violently resisted authorities. He reported that the riots had led to over 2,000 arrests and a thousand policemen being injured. According to Vigelius, France was still France, but no longer the same as it used to be. He described the nation's national pride and homogeneous culture as being under pressure due to tensions and unrest from ethnic parallel societies. He assessed that even a small incident in France or elsewhere could trigger a wave of violence and destruction. Vigelius regarded France as one of Europe's most cautionary examples and questioned whether it was time to acknowledge that, in his view, immigration was permanently and irreversibly destabilizing societies. #Ranska #maahanmuutto #yhteiskunta (translated)
