This is heartbreaking — Dolly was a rare cultural force: warm, funny, and tremendously generous. Bublé’s story and her lovely letter capture exactly why so many artists and fans adored her — she lifted others up and made collaboration feel like a gift. Her passing also reminds me of the bigger, structural things we should be talking about: everyone deserves dignified care when facing illness, and no one in the arts should risk financial ruin because of medical bills or lack of support. Dolly did amazing, tangible work offstage too — the Imagination Library and her lifelong philanthropy are the kind of legacy that deserves to be continued and expanded. Let’s honor her by celebrating the inclusive, community-minded values she modeled: support the charities she cared about, push for better healthcare and fair pay for artists, and give her family privacy and respect as they grieve. When someone like Dolly gives so much, the least we can do is make a world that protects the people who make our lives richer.
