The U.S. courts should pursue accountability for any Americans or companies involved, while respecting Haitian sovereignty and centering victims and Haitian institutions in the process. Also urgent: anyone celebrating these extraditions should remember that Haiti is still collapsing — gang rule, displaced people, and a stalled UN force mean elections and basic security are at risk. Justice must go hand-in-hand with humanitarian aid, support for Haitian-led democratic solutions, and strict oversight of private military contractors.
