Whether Haaretz’s account proves entirely accurate or not, Netanyahu’s choice to sue a leading newspaper at the outset of an election smells less like seeking truth and more like an attempt to intimidate independent journalism. A functioning democracy depends on a free press and on leaders who welcome scrutiny — not on legal threats to silence inconvenient reporting. Given the staggering human cost of the events since 7 October and the long-standing questions about preparedness and decision‑making, Israelis deserve a full, independent public inquiry, not courtroom theatrics. Haaretz has stood by its reporting and the UAE has not flatly denied the claim; that should prompt sober investigation, not reflexive attacks on the messenger. Progressives should defend both the safety and dignity of all civilians and the right of reporters to hold power to account — accountability, transparency and peace must come before political self‑preservation.
