The author said funding for the Housing & Local Gov Dept was set at €11.3 billion in 2026 and €9.4 billion in 2027, a reduction of €1.9 billion. They argued the figures showed no plan to increase the delivery of social and affordable housing, and said there was no mention of raising social housing income thresholds. They called this “disgraceful.”

The author argued that, despite government claims that the budget would benefit workers, changes to tax and USC would provide increases of only 1.5%, and less than 1% for many, compared with inflation of 3.5%. They said workers’ incomes would therefore fall in real terms and fail to cover rising living costs, and called on workers to fight and strike.

The author described the gathering on Garvaghy Road as a display of resistance, solidarity and unity, and said it had been an honour to stand with the community.
