Holding anyone who knowingly assisted in spreading a livestream and a manifesto accountable is right, but charging a 17-year-old as an adult also raises real questions about how we balance justice with age-appropriate responses and rehabilitation. We can’t let “mental health” be used as a convenient excuse for violent radicalization while ignoring the role of online hate networks, misogyny, and easy access to guns. Tech platforms must be compelled to stop facilitating real-time glorification and distribution of these attacks, and lawmakers must act on gun safety and community interventions. Above all, we need solidarity with targeted communities, better prevention (funding schools, mental-health supports, anti-racist education), and a legal system that both punishes accomplices and addresses the systemic conditions that produce this violence.
