The Première Plume prize, won this year by Orélien, rewards the best first novel. Think of the writer who finished second. Maybe full of talent, he will not be recognized, not publicized, so he will sell 200 books instead of 15,000. Discouraged, or deprived of a new publishing contract, he will not write a second novel. A few words about "Balance ton Claude," a project through which we revealed that "It was that or die," the phenomenon book of the literary rentrée, is undoubtedly largely written by an AI. 1) I was not alone; it was a collective project. The others will reveal their identities in due time if they wish. 2) To all those who blame us for harming Orélien, think instead of the author who spent hundreds of hours on his manuscript to write a magnificent book that deserved the Goncourt but did not receive it. Would it have been fairer to let this author be deceived? And to let thousands of readers be betrayed? We obviously have compassion for the difficult days Orélien must be experiencing, and we hope he is supported. But it seemed to us that it was our duty to raise the alarm. 3) What were our motivations? Those who read me know that I have been reflecting for a year on the effects of AI on our lives. Although I am rather techno-optimistic, I fear that after several millennia of civilization based on writing, AI may cause the disappearance of reading and writing. AI can, and will increasingly be able to (the writing ticks will disappear with the advancement of models), produce exceptional works, in almost complete autonomy. Human content will be (is already?) drowned in an ocean of excellent quality AI content. One day, a human writer will ask themselves: what’s the point? What’s the point of spending hundreds of hours researching, reflecting, choosing my words to be suspected in all cases of having copied-pasted Chat GPT (because some deceive their readers, the suspicion will generalize) and not being read (human attention is a finite resource; the more it is consumed by AI content, the less it is allocated to human productions)? To preserve the incentives to write in this new world, it would be necessary for readers to know whether they are dealing with a text by a human or a robot, to be able, if they wish, to disproportionately allocate their attention to human productions. I therefore cherish the existence of Pangram (a company in which I am not an investor, even though this theory is amusing), while fearing that the software will be surpassed by the advancements of the models. In saying this, I do not think solely of writers but above all of readers. Readers seem to enjoy reading a novel written by an AI, but only… when they do not know it is AI! We can collectively blind ourselves for a certain time, but the day that most human writers have abandoned, the day when every reader understands that they are facing, with a high probability, the prose of Chat GPT, they will likely stop reading. Indeed, what fills the experience of reading a good novel, or even an essay, is not only the fact of reading an interesting series of words (even if that matters!), but also the fact of reading words that another human has thought about, weighed, which reflect their subjectivity and uniqueness. And thus entering, through this reading, into contact with another mind. Human beings are not meant to remain long isolated from their peers; the reading of a novel written by a human connects them to one of their peers; the reading of a novel produced by Chat GPT does nothing of the sort. That is why it is important to denounce authors who offer a copy-paste of Chat GPT while claiming it is their own writing. Not only do they betray the moral pact that binds them to their readership, but they also contribute unfairly (as they lie about the nature of their product!) to taking readers away from those who still make the effort to choose their words (and thus to discourage that effort). And above all, they contribute to the generalization of suspicion, eroding the presumption of humanity that a text benefits from in front of potential readers. They hasten the arrival of a world where no one will read or write, with all the cognitive and cultural regressions that this implies. (I am also surprised to see some writers not understanding that by defending Orélien's approach, they are sawing off the branch that has allowed literature to exist.) Let’s be clear: if AI content producers wish to compete with human writers, it is their strict right *as long as they do not lie about the nature of their work and thus allow readers to choose knowingly*. If it turns out that under these conditions, readers' attention still massively gravitates toward the artificial rather than the authentic, human writers will have lost fairly. But the reactions to the Orélien affair show that readers seem to have a strong preference for the authentic. The project was thus born from these concerns. Neither Orélien's political ideas nor the theme of his book mattered to us (those who read me know that my fight against slop is not politically partisan). It turns out that attentive readers spoke to us about significant suspicions regarding this particular book. We tested many other books; none reached such scores of AI. 4) I think (this only reflects my opinion, not the other members of the collective) that a bad trial is being made against the juries of literary prizes and the critics who praised this book. The style of the text could be tedious for anyone who is used to discussing with LLMs, but for others, the admiration is understandable: if every word of this book had been chosen by a human, it would probably have been necessary to acknowledge a form of genius in the rhythm of this writing, sustained as it is over 250 pages. The deepest angle of this controversy is not the naivety of the juries (we will all, sooner or later, be surpassed by the progress of these models), but rather this speed of progression, illustrated here by the ability of AIs not only to pass the Turing test but to win our most prestigious literary prizes. This is dizzying and raises existential questions about the place of humans in this new world. 5) Thank you to all the media outlets, including Libération, France Info, France Inter, Le Huffington Post, and Les Échos, who conducted honest and rigorous investigative work to establish the reliability of Pangram.
