Special shout out to @melodyschreiber.com who has stayed on the beat for this story. @standupforscience.net for all of their advocacy and also leading the charge to raise funds to cover HepB vaccines so new borns in GB can be vaccinated and not preyed upon by unethical studies.

My biggest lessons from this is that, many voices calling out unethical research still have the power to prevent harm. The global health community came together is solidarity and in advocacy to speak up on why the proposed study was so abhorrent. This was amplified by health journalists.

In a timeline of very bad news this is the best news that I have read today. The controversial Hepatitis B study planned by Danish researchers in Guinea Bissau has now been halted. It was unethical when it was proposed and is still unethical today. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/o...

One would have hoped that in 2026 we would have made enough progress as a global community to address outbreaks like this more robustly. The news about a case in Abuja, linked to travel should cause more concern than the faux plague alert from Russia a few weeks ago but it will not.

Spread to countries linked to travel, is just a reminder that Ebola ignored elsewhere is Ebola in your own backyard. This outbreak does not end without a global, concerted and committed effort to address it within the DRC. 10 years ago in W. Africa it took two years.

This is not the news I wanted to read today. It is clear that the uncontrolled outbreak in the DRC is not tenable and we will continue to see imported cases outside of the DRC. Kenya and now Nigeria. This is a regional/ global emergency. www.wsls.com/health/2026/...
