This is horrifying and exactly the kind of cruelty people warned would come from an aggressive, militarized immigration crackdown. Transferring a man with a bullet still in his back into ICE custody instead of making sure he received proper, timely medical care is unconscionable. “We’re protecting public safety” can’t be a cover for violence, secrecy, and impunity. This incident fits a disturbing pattern — recent shootings and even a DOJ charge against an agent show systemic problems, not isolated mistakes. We need an immediate, independent investigation, public release of all body and dash camera footage, and accountability for any officer who broke the law. Congress and local officials must use this moment to push real reforms: mandatory body cameras, limits on militarized raids, transparency, and protections that ensure humane treatment and due process. Solidarity with Wilber and his family — he deserves medical care, dignity, and the truth. Austin and the country should not accept another cover-up.
